Overview

The 6-Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it takes you through several beautiful landscapes before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

The trek begins in the lush rainforest. You then continue through moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone.

Along the way, you will enjoy dramatic mountain views, changing landscapes, and the support of an experienced mountain crew.

Day 01: :

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast. You will drive to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations.

The trek starts in the rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, birds, and lush vegetation.

Take your time and walk at a steady pace. After several hours, you will reach Machame Camp.

Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.

Trekking time: About 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Altitude: 1,800m to 3,000m

Day 02 :

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, continue climbing through the forest toward the Shira Plateau.

The vegetation becomes shorter as you gain altitude. The trail also becomes more open, giving you impressive views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscape.

You will arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner and rest while preparing for the next stage of the climb.

Habitat: Moorland
Altitude: 3,000m to 3,845m

Day 03 :

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today is an important acclimatization day. You will climb toward Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” section gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

The landscape becomes more rugged as you approach Barranco Valley. You may also see giant lobelias and other unique Kilimanjaro vegetation.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Trekking time: About 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Altitude: 3,845m to 3,960m

Day 04 :

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Your day begins with the famous Barranco Wall.

The climb looks challenging from below, but the trail is manageable with the help of your guide. Take it slowly and enjoy the views as you climb.

After reaching the top, continue through the alpine desert toward Karanga Camp.

This is a shorter trekking day, giving you time to rest and prepare for the summit stages.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Trekking time: About 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m

Day 05 :

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

fter breakfast, begin your trek toward Barafu Camp.

The vegetation becomes sparse as you enter the high-altitude desert. You will pass through rocky terrain with spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Arrive at Barafu Camp and have an early dinner. Your guide will brief you about the summit attempt.

Rest as much as possible because you will wake up around midnight for the final ascent.

Trekking time: About 4–5 hours
Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m

Day 06 :

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final day starts around midnight. Climb slowly toward Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the highest point in Africa.

Reach the summit around sunrise, enjoy the views, and take photos before descending. After a short rest at Barafu Camp, continue to Mweka Gate.

Your vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel.
