2 Nights at Northern Serengeti

After breakfast with a lunch box game drive along the way to Mara River for wildebeest Crossing
When the annual Great Migration arrives in the area (July–September) wildlife viewing along the course of the Mara River is nothing short of breathtaking. Perhaps images come to mind of great herds crossing a river whilst being awaited by crocodiles. Serengeti Mara is the best location in the national park to see these dry-season wildebeest river crossings. During the Great Migration period, enormous herds of wildebeest and their entourage congregate on one side of the Mara River. It may take a while (sometimes up to a few days) before one brave individual dare cross the river, the rest will then follow suit. Peculiarly enough, these herds sometimes move back and forth from one side of the river to the other, for no apparent reason.
Transit driving distance and time: 190 Kms – 3 hours’ drive
Game drive distance and time: 80 Kms – 6 hours (driving with stoppages)
Road condition: rough Road.

On the other full day of Northern Serengeti, explore the pristine wilderness of the Serengeti on morning and afternoon game drives. You will be amazed by the sheer abundance of wildlife, from graceful antelopes to powerful predators, living in their natural habitat. Experience the wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

After breakfast depart with lunch boxes, and a short game drive of Serengeti Mara before leaving for the Serengeti Seronera area.
Seronera is one of many world-famous attractions in the Central Serengeti. Seronera Valley supports a much greater diversity of resident wildlife than anywhere else in the Serengeti including elephant, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, hippo, topi, reedbuck, buffalo, and baboon. This resident prey in turn attracts the highest concentrations of large predators in Africa (lion, hyena, leopard, and cheetah) and a multitude of smaller predators (mongoose, jackal, serval, and bat-eared fox).

Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater to Karatu

After breakfast, drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area descend into the crater, and spend a full day doing game drives inside the crater. One of the World’s largest Calderas, 20 km wide, Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the best Wildlife viewing areas where Black Rhinos can be seen in Tanzania. The crater at 2.286 m above sea level is the largest unbroken Calderas in the world. Surrounded by very steep walls, rising 610 m from the crater floor, it covers 260 km2 and is home to over 30.000 animals, almost half of them being zebra and wildebeest. Ngorongoro is listed as a World Heritage site. In the evening ascend to the top and drive Karatu for dinner and overnight. (Bed, Dinner, Breakfast, and Lunch).
Transit driving distance and time: 145 Kms – 2 hours drive

It is a hunters and collectors, which formerly inhabited the Serengeti, but was forced away by stronger and more aggressive. The Hadza live in traditional ways, hunting games such as dik-diks and collecting honey. Their huts are simple, built in a few hours, and as easily abandoned. Like other people of hunters and collectors, the Hadza speak a click language. After hunting and engagement with, you depart for another culture of the Ndatoga, a cattle and agricultural town in the area. Datoga is the original name of the Mangati, Masai meaning “fierce enemy” as they are ancient enemies of the Masai. Later drive to Moshi for overnight with a stop for your lunch on the way.

Moshi to Materuni Waterfall

After Breakfast drive to the Materuni waterfall and cultural experiences.
A tour of Materuni Village and Waterfalls is a great way to spend a day away from the bustle of town life. The walk to Materuni Waterfall offers a glimpse into the nature of Tanzania allowing you either to prepare your body for the forthcoming climb to Kilimanjaro or ease your muscles after the climb.
The Materuni Waterfall tour starts with a walk through the area adjacent to the waterfall, rich in the beautiful natural scenery of Tanzania. It is an opportunity to see how local fruits grow, as well as learn some of the local history, traditions, village economy, and agricultural and cultural life. When you get to the waterfall, you can refresh yourself in the natural pool, so swimsuits will come in handy!
The villagers will demonstrate the process of coffee farming and guide you through the preparation of coffee from a bean to a cup. When the coffee is ready, villagers will serve lunch – a national Chagga meal.

The Usambara Mountains are considered to be a biodiversity hotspot due to a high degree of endemism in the flora and fauna found there. This mountain range was formed millions of years ago and has remained relatively undisturbed for most of that time, which has given rise to the growth of old forests and other treasures. The Usambaras and the Pare Mountains form part of the Eastern Arc Mountain Range.

Visitors come here to take a break from the heat and dust of the northern safari circuit and to just enjoy the lush green surroundings and champagne air. The Usambara Mountains offer amazing views, historic sites, and idyllic trails to explore. The fertile mountain slopes are dotted with small villages and farms but for the most part, they are covered with tropical forests.

What is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration – also called the Great Wildlife Migration – is an enormous, continuous and roughly circular migration across the plains and woodlands of Tanzania and Kenya by two million wildebeests, zebras and antelopes. It’s the largest land-based migration in the world. Witnessing thousands-strong herds stretched out in front of you is a sight you never forget.

What are the Big Five?

The Big Five are lion, leopard, bush elephant, black rhino and Cape buffalo. These are the animals considered to be the hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot.

How long do I need for safari?

This is obviously a hard question to answer. The longer you spend on safari, the more animals you’ll see, and the greater the variety you’re likely to spot. If you’re hoping to spot the Big Five, for instance, one day in all likelihood won’t cut it. But if you give yourself four to five days, you might well manage it.

What we can say is that you need to factor in driving times when heading on a safari. For instance, from Kilimanjaro International Airport (gateway to the Northern Circuit), you can reach reserves like Arusha National Park and Lake Manyara National Park within hours and go on safari that same day. But Serengeti National Park, fon the other hand, is quite a drive, so you should factor in a day of travel each way. Fortunately, the drive to Serengeti takes you past Ngorongoro Crater, which is a MUST, as well as some other attractions worth a visit like Olduvai Gorge.

Please chat to us for advice on how long is needed based on what you want to see.

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti

Everyone has his priorities and things they want to see some people want to see baby animals being born, for instance, while others want to see as many animals as possible. Still others want good birdspotting, some want to see flowers, and some want to see the animals in a lush setting. And of course, many want to see the Great Wildlife Migration and its chaotic river crossings. Please read Best Time to Visit the Serengeti to identify the best months for each of the above-mentioned highlights. Also, feel free to chat with us so we can advise you.
